Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. From the first week of December, churches across India rehearse for the carol service, youth groups go house to house for carol rounds in Kerala and the North-East, and Sunday schools prepare their Christmas programme. Most of them sing the same well-known carols every year. A new song in your own language, written by your choir or youth group about the Christmas story, gives the programme something nobody has heard before.
Step by step
- Decide where it will be sung: the carol service, a carol round, the Sunday school programme, or a family video.
- Write the lyrics in your language with [Verse] and [Chorus] tags, or describe the song in a sentence ("a joyful Malayalam Christmas song about the shepherds hearing the angels, for a youth carol round") and Autunes writes the lyrics.
- Choose the vocal language: Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi or English.
- Describe the style. Ideas: "joyful Christmas carol, sleigh bells, acoustic guitar, church choir in the chorus"; "Kerala carol round song, chenda and keyboard, energetic group vocals"; "soft Christmas lullaby, piano and strings, gentle female voice" for the nativity; "Hindi worship, tabla and guitar, warm male vocal".
- Generate, listen, and make two or three versions to choose from.
Ideas for the words
Tell one moment of the story per song so it stays simple to sing: Mary and Joseph finding no room, the shepherds and the angels, the wise men following the star, the baby in the manger. Or write about your own church's Christmas: the star on the roof, the midnight service, the carol round in the cold.
- Hindi chorus idea: "Taara chamka Bethlehem mein, / Yeshu aaya charni mein, / Gaao khushi ke geet sabhi, / Aaj janma Raja hamara."
- Keep the lines short and the chorus easy, so a choir and a congregation can pick it up after one listen.
- Write in your own script (Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Devanagari) or in Roman letters; both work.
Use your own words, not a copied carol
Old carols such as Silent Night are public domain in their original form, but many translations and most modern Christian songs belong to their writers and publishers. Write your own lyrics, or retell the same story in your own words, so the song your choir sings and shares is entirely yours.
Downloading it
On the free plan you can make the song and play it in your account; downloading it costs ₹9 for that song, and then it is yours to play in church, at a programme or online.
