The standard happy birthday song works for everyone, which is exactly why it feels like nobody in particular. A song that says the person's name, mentions their terrible jokes or their famous rajma chawal, and sounds like the music they actually like, gets played again long after the cake is gone.
You do not need to sing or play anything. This is a step-by-step walkthrough you can finish in an evening, with lyrics you can adapt and the exact costs.
Step 1: Collect four details
Before writing, note down the person's name or nickname, their age or milestone if they will enjoy hearing it, one habit or trait everyone recognises, and one shared memory. Four details are enough for a two-verse song. More than that and the lines get crowded.
Step 2: Write a short verse and chorus
Keep each line short enough to say in one breath, and put the name in the chorus so it repeats. Use [Verse] and [Chorus] tags so the song knows its shape. Three examples you can change:
- For a sister (Hindi): [Verse] Bachpan ki ladaiyan, remote pe jung, ab bhi tu jeete, wahi purana dhang. [Chorus] Happy birthday Anaya, meri jaan, teri hasi se roshan saara makaan.

- For a friend (Punjabi): [Verse] Hostel diyan raatan, maggi te gallan, tere naal hi langhiyan saariyan kallan. [Chorus] Happy birthday Jassi, nach ke dikha, saal navaan aaya, khushiyan le aa.
Step 3: Choose the style
Match the music to the person, not just the occasion. A grandfather who loves old film songs and a 21-year-old who lives on Punjabi pop need different sounds. Some descriptions you can paste in:
