How do you make a sad or unplugged version of your song with AI?

Published 4 November 2026

Short answer

Use Variation for another take of the same song: choose Fresh take or Reimagine and describe the mood, for example "slow, sad, piano and strings". For a bigger change in genre while keeping the words, use Remix (Pro and Creator). Variation costs 5 credits a take, and the free plan includes one.

In India a hit song rarely stays in one version. There is the original, then the sad version, the unplugged one, the female version, the reply version and the lofi mix for late nights. Each one finds a different audience. If you made a song you love, it can have those lives too.

Autunes has two tools for it, and choosing the right one saves credits.

Variation: another take of the same song

Variation sings and plays the song again. It has three strengths: Subtle gives the same song with a cleaner take, Fresh take is familiar but new, and Reimagine is a loose interpretation. An optional style box lets you push the mood. It works on the whole song or a section you select, costs 5 credits a take on every plan, and takes about 3-6 minutes for a full song. The free plan includes one variation; Pro and Creator are unlimited.

Remix: a new genre, same words

Remix re-records the music around your words in a style you describe, with a slider from "New take" to "Stay close". It is the stronger tool when you want the song to sound clearly different, such as a full lofi production or a bhangra mix. Remix is on Pro and Creator.

Prompts that work

  • Sad version (Variation, Fresh take): "slow, emotional, soft piano and strings, gentle vocal"
  • Unplugged (Variation, Reimagine, or Remix): "acoustic guitar only, intimate, no drums"
  • Lofi (Remix, Stay close): "lofi hip hop, mellow keys, soft drums, vinyl crackle"
  • Cleaner take of the same song (Variation, Subtle): leave the style empty
  • Just the chorus feels flat (Variation on a selected section): "bigger, more energy"

What about a female or male version?

You can ask for it: write "female vocal" or "male vocal" in the style box of a Fresh take or Reimagine variation, or in a Remix towards New take. The singer often changes, but not every time, because the tools are built to keep the song recognisable. On paid plans, tick Two takes in Variation to get two tries at once.

If you want the song in your own voice, man or woman, Creator's "Sing it in my voice" re-sings it from a 20-second recording of you.

Compare before you choose

New takes play next to the original on the same page, so you can switch between them and keep the one that works. Nothing replaces your original: every version is saved as its own track.

Frequently asked questions

Does a variation replace my song?

No. It is saved as a new track named "(Variation)" and the original stays.

Can I make a version of a song I uploaded?

Variation works on songs made on Autunes. For uploads, use Remix (Pro and Creator).

How long does a variation take?

About 3-6 minutes for a full song; a short section is quicker.
